How IVF Works
In vitro fertilization is considered one of the most effective fertility treatments in the world. During the procedure, eggs are extracted from the female and fertilized with male sperm in a laboratory. The fertilized egg, or embryo, is then implanted in the woman’s uterus. After 10 to 14 days of implantation, a test is performed to determine whether the woman is pregnant. On average, an IVF cycle spans between two and four weeks.
The IVF Process
Preparation: Based on your condition, we use estradiol, OCP, or a combination of protocols to make maximum recruitment of the antral follicles.
Protocol: Individualized ranging from natural, semi-natural (natural assistant), gentle stimulation, moderate stimulation or conventional IVF, or three egg retrieval. We also offer a small gauge of 20G and local anesthesia to decrease the rate of complications.
IVF generally begins with egg preparation. Injections of fertility drugs are administered daily to help ensure that there are as many viable eggs as possible. Your doctor will perform a blood test to determine when the eggs are ready to be extracted.
The eggs can then be retrieved through transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. Ultrasound technology helps detect follicles and special equipment is used to carefully aspirate the eggs which make retrieval easier. With this quick and efficient procedure, multiple eggs can be retrieved in just 20 minutes.
Once the eggs have been successfully retrieved, they are combined with male sperm and incubated for several days. After fertilization has occurred, the fertilized egg is implanted into the woman’s uterus through the cervical canal. Your doctor will then be able to tell if you are pregnant within 10 to 14 days.
IVF can be used with a partner’s sperm or with donor sperm. If a female’s eggs are not likely to work due to age or similar factors, donor eggs can also be retrieved.
